Why Every New Shopify Store Should Start as a Free Development Store
Before you spend a dollar on Shopify, start with a free development store. Here's what it is, why it matters for new store owners, and how fast we can set one up for you.

If you’re about to launch a new Shopify store, there’s a decision worth making before you pick a theme, install a single app, or write your first product description: don’t start on a paid plan. Start with a free Shopify development store instead.
What a Shopify development store actually is
A Shopify development store is a fully functional Shopify store — themes, apps, checkout, the works — created through the Shopify Partner program at no cost. It behaves exactly like a live store, with one key difference: there’s no subscription fee until you’re actually ready to launch and switch it over to a paid plan. Until then, you can build, test, and break things freely without a bill showing up every month for a store nobody’s buying from yet.
Why that matters for a new store owner
Most of the real cost of a new Shopify store isn’t the platform fee — it’s the time spent getting the store right before it’s ready for real customers. A development store removes the pressure to rush that process:
- No clock running while you build. Whether it takes two weeks or two months to get the store where you want it, you’re not paying a monthly fee for an empty storefront.
- A real sandbox, not a demo. Every app, every theme, every checkout setting behaves exactly like it will on the live store, so what you test is what you actually ship.
- Nothing is customer-facing until you say so. You can experiment with pricing, product structure, and layout without a half-finished store showing up in front of real visitors.
- A clean handoff when you’re ready. When the store is built, a development store converts to a live paid plan without rebuilding anything — themes, products, and settings all carry over.
It works no matter who’s building the store
This isn’t just useful for stores we build. A free development store makes sense whether:
- We’re building it for you. We get the store fully built and tested on a development store, and only convert it to a paid plan the day you’re actually ready to launch — see our e-commerce development work for how that process works.
- You’re building it yourself. Shopify’s own tools — including its AI store-builder — work exactly the same way inside a development store, so you can DIY the whole thing without paying a subscription while you figure it out.
- Another developer is handling it. If you’ve hired someone else, or you’re switching developers mid-project, a development store keeps the build free and low-stakes until launch is actually decided.
Getting set up takes minutes, not days
Setting up a Shopify development store is mostly a Shopify Partner account formality, not a technical project. We can get you a development store created and ready to work in within minutes — whether you’re handing us the build, doing it yourself, or working with someone else entirely. There’s no obligation to use us for the build just because we set up the store.
